Leather & Colors
What is vegetable tanned leather and why is it important?
Vegetable-tanned leather is a high-quality leather treated with natural tannins from plant materials such as tree bark and fruits. This traditional method produces thicker, more durable leather and is safer and more environmentally friendly compared to chrome tanning, which uses chemicals like Chromium-VI. These chemicals can be toxic and are often found in cheaper leather products. Vegetable-tanned leather, being free from such toxins, offers superior quality and durability, making it a preferred choice for premium leather goods.
Should I protect my leather grips from rain?
No, occasional rain is not a problem for Manoli Grips. The leather is highly durable and handles moisture well. Regular contact with your palms automatically maintains your Manoli Grips. For extra care, you can occasionally treat the leather with some leather conditioner, although it is usually not required. However, we don’t recommend leaving your Manoli Grips exposed to rain for extended periods.
Do I need to maintain my leather grips?
Manoli Grips are designed to be low-maintenance and naturally condition themselves with regular use. The natural oils from your hands help keep the leather moisturized, so there's generally no need for additional upkeep. However, if you notice any scratches, you can use a leather polish to minimize them. If the leather ever seems a bit dry, applying a small amount of leather conditioner can help restore their apparance and longevity.
Can my leather grips be repaired?
Yes, we are a small artisan workshop and are happy to repair your Manoli Grips if they ever need it. Our skilled craftsmen will use the original leather and components to restore your grips, ensuring they continue to serve you well for years to come. Instead of replacing well-worn grips, we are dedicated to preserving the unique patina you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
Do leather grips wear out?
Leather grips do develop a patina over time, which is one of the reasons we designed Manoli Grips. We wanted to create a durable alternative to silicone and rubber grips that would not need constant replacement. Made from robust leather, Manoli Grips provide a long-lasting solution for bicycle grips. While they may show signs of wear, they remain visually appealing and functional, even when well-worn.
I accidentally scratched my Manoli grips—what can I do?
Leather is a resilient, natural material, and many scratches will fade over time with regular use. To accelerate this process, you can apply a leather polishing paste without color pigments, which will nourish the leather and enhance its appearance. We recommend avoiding leather impregnation products, as they introduce chemicals that you may not want in contact with your skin. For deeper scratches or permanent leather damage, feel free to reach out to us; we're happy to help with repairs to keep your grips looking their best.
Which lockring color should I choose?
We recommend black lockrings for black handlebars and silver lockrings for silver handlebars to maintain a consistent look.
Does the leather color change over time?
Yes, the leather color will change over time. This is a natural process called patina, where the leather darkens and develops a unique character as it ages. Exposure to sunlight, oils from your hands, and general use all contribute to this beautiful transformation.
Do you offer a vegan option?
We currently don't have a vegan option for our leather grips. We understand that some people prefer not to use animal products. The leather we use is a byproduct of the meat industry, which allows us to repurpose material that would otherwise go to waste. Unfortunately, vegan leather doesn't offer the same properties we need for durability and performance, and it can often have a larger environmental impact than traditional leather.
Product & Installation
Why are these leather grips priced higher than other options on the market?
Manoli leather grips are expertly handcrafted from high-quality, vegetable-tanned leather, known for its durability, toxin-free properties, and eco-friendliness. Each pair is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring both longevity and exceptional comfort. Although the initial cost may be higher, their enduring quality offers long-term value and could even save you money over time compared to cheaper alternatives.
Do Manoli grips fit all handlebars?
Yes, Manoli Grips fit all handlebars worldwide (excluding dedicated race-bars designed for use with grip tape). The grip area of these handlebars universally measures 22.2mm in diameter. You can verify your handlebars using a digital caliper.
Are Manoli leather grips designed specifically for Brompton bikes?
Manoli Grips are designed with Brompton bicycles in mind, but they are versatile and suitable for use on various bicycle types. Our customers use Manoli Grips for urban cycling, touring, and they are even used by professional mountain bikers recreationally and in competitions.
What options do I have for giving Manoli leather grips as a gift?
We would love to help you make your gift special! Please contact us via email ciao@manoligrips.com and we will work with you to organize a thoughtful and personalized present for your recipient.
How do I install Manoli leather grips on my handlebars?
Manoli grips are designed for easy installation and fit securely onto your handlebars. All you need is a 3mm Allen key to tighten the small screw. For detailed mounting instructions, please visit our dedicated page.
Can I leave my bicycle outside year-round?
No, please don't do that. Constant exposure to the elements will greatly shorten the lifespan of ALL your bike's components, including your Manoli grips. Over time, the leather can become brittle and shrink. To protect your bike and grips, it is best to store your bicycle indoors.
Are Manoli leather grips available for Grip Shifters?
Currently, we do not offer Manoli Grips for grip shift systems. We understand that many customers would appreciate this option. We are actively exploring its development.
